GRAND RAPIDS - The Rev. E. James "Jim" Elvig, age 77, of Grand Rapids, Minn., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, after a year long struggle with stomach cancer.
He was the son of Henry and Loleta Elvig born in Brainerd, Minn., on Dec. 10, 1930. His early years were spent working on the family farm and more preferably behind the soda fountain at the family drug store in Brainerd. Jim graduated from Washington High School in Brainerd in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and graduated from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., where he met his sweetheart, Marjorie. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Binns on Aug. 17, 1956, in Newark, N.J. Jim graduated from Faith Seminary in Philadelphia and Dubuque Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. Jim, a Presbyterian pastor for 47 years, served many churches in the Midwest and Grand Rapids area but most recently at Bowstring Chapel, Deer River, and Riverside Presbyterian in Bigfork. He also served at Keewatin, Lawron, Goodland, Warba and Jacobson. Jim was a member of Presbytery of Northern Waters. Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend. Jim will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit, sense of humor and legacy of faith. Jim was an avid reader, gardener, expert woodworker and fisherman. He is preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, Stephen and Paul; and infant grandsons, Patrick Riley and Jacob Von Duyke.

Survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Margie; five daughters, Nancy (Tom) Ringgenberg, of Minneapolis, Betsy (Andy) Von Duyke, of Minnetonka, Minn., Susan (Bill) Neumeister, of Minneapolis, Laurie Elvig (Joe) Riley, of Cold Spring, Minn., Patricia (Michael) Reed, of Eden Prairie, Minn., two sisters, Virginia (Dick) Bender, of Brainerd, Martha Look, of Nisswa, Minn.; one brother, Charles (June) Elvig, of Bothel, Wash.; one sister-in-law, Marilyn Wiedenman, of Minnetonka; cousin, Marilyn Ashmun, of Brainerd, Minn.; several nieces and nephews; and 15 grandchildren.
A visitation will be Friday, Nov. 7, from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral service at the Community Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids, Minn. Inurnment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
