Where to go when heading for the polls

Posted: Tuesday, November 06, 2007

Before heading to the polls Tuesday to vote in the Brainerd or Crosby-Ironton school district special elections, make sure you know where you're going.

School board elections have combined polling sites so the place you typically vote may not be the same place this year.

Polls are open from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Brainerd voters will be asked to vote for three of five school board candidates and to vote for or against an operating levy referendum. The levy question will ask to revoke the existing operating levy of $199.24 and replace it with a $986 per pupil levy effective in 2008 and applicable for 10 years that would increase annually for inflation.

The additional funds would eliminate the district's immediate budget shortfall, restore a minimum fund balance, allow for additional funds for curriculum and work force preparation program and fund all-day, everyday kindergarten at all eight elementary schools.

Crosby-Ironton voters will be asked two questions. The first question must pass in order for the second question to be considered. The first question will ask voters for a $495 per pupil operating levy increase effective in 2008 and applicable for 10 years that would increase annually for inflation.

The funds, if the first question passes, would be used to maintain existing academic and extracurricular activities for students, as well as adding all-day, everyday kindergarten.

The second question will ask voters for a $100 per pupil increase, which would increase annually for inflation, and be used to pay for preventative and maintenance-related projects.
