PINE RIVER -- Pine River's Christmas celebration will be Dec. 14 with events sponsored by the Pine River Chamber of Commerce.
Festivities will include a kids' Christmas program 2 to 4 p.m.; Parade of Lights at 5:30 p.m.; a holiday open house at the Information Center; a yuletide bonfire; and horsedrawn sleigh rides following the Parade of Lights.
Santa will appear at the kids' Christmas program. There will be games, treats and a holiday video will be shown. Admission is free. The location is still to be determined.
A family dance featuring the Chmielewsiki Fun Time Band, sponsored by the Pine River-Backus Community Education Department, will begin at 7 p.m. at Backus Elementary School. Admission is free. Attendees are invited to bring a monetary donation for one of several area charities.
The Pine River Chamber of Commerce will host a home and business lighting contest. A $100 chamber gift certificate will be awarded first place in each category, home and business. A $50 and a $25 gift certificate will be awarded to second and third place in the home division.
Judging of both homes and businesses will take place the evening of Dec. 11. Winners will be announced at the chamber open house Dec. 14, after the Parade of Lights. Those wishing to have their area home judged should contact Shirley Nelson at Pine River State Bank, (218) 587-4463, to be entered in the contest.
Two $100 chamber gift certificate also will be awarded to the winners of the Parade of Lights. The prizes will be awarded to the units judged "Best Theme" and "Best Use of Lights." Parade line-up will be in front of First Lutheran Church beginning at 4 p.m.
City of Lights set
Nov. 29 in Nisswa
NISSWA -- Nisswa's 15th annual City of Lights will be Nov. 29 in downtown Nisswa.
Following is a schedule of activities:
2:30-6:30 p.m. -- Horse-drawn hay wagon rides.
4-5:45 p.m. -- Reindeer sleigh rides, $1 per person.
4-4:30 p.m. -- Storytelling at Rainy Days Bookstore.
4:30 p.m. -- Light the bonfire.
4:45 p.m. -- Pioneer Village opens with free hot cider and doughnuts; hot dogs, chili and s'more concessions by the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce building.
5:15 p.m. -- Lighting of the Luminaries.
5:29 p.m. -- City of Lights countdown begins.
5:30 p.m. -- Lights turned on.
5:35 p.m. -- Love Lights a Tree ceremony in front of the Nisswa chamber building.
6 p.m. -- Santa Claus arrives by the mini doughnut stand.
7:15 p.m. -- Fireworks begin.
Holiday carolers and The Salvation Army Band will perform throughout the evening around the city of Nisswa.
