Super Sabado

Al "Jose" Velasquez, the singing barber, serenaded guests at lunch as part of the Central Lakes College Spanish Club's Super Sabado (Super Saturday), a Hispanic cultural event with hands-on activities designed for immersion through song, dances, crafts and food. Other November Spanish Department activities include the Nov. 12 Celebracion Hispanica community band concert at the college in Brainerd and the Nov. 19 international folk dance demonstration and instruction.

The Spanish Department at Central Lakes College hosted a Hispanic culture immersion day, Super Sabado, which included creating treats associated with Mexico's Nov. 1 All Saints Day and Nov. 2 Day of the Dead. Among the 40 guests were Terry McLean of Nisswa (left) and Lynn Hunt of Pequot Lakes. They made sugar skulls and later participated in a Chilean skit about creation called "La Creacion del Mundo Segun Los Mapuches." Participants sampled cultural elements from Bolivia, Uruguay, and other Latin American countries.
