Congressman James Oberstar, D-Minn., and former state Sen. Don Samuelson of Brainerd recently met with economic development officials from the Small Business Development Center at Central Lakes College.
Regional SBDC Director Greg Bergman coordinated the meeting.
Oberstar had requested the session in Brainerd to discuss the needs of the small-business community in the region and show his support for the efforts of all centers in his district.
Those meeting with him included Bob Hutton from the Region 5 Development Commission, Julie Hofius from the Brainerd Lakes Area Development Corp., and Tom Haglin of Lindar Corp., a member of the SBDC Advisory Committee.
They discussed opportunities for economic development and the business needs in the region.
Julie Platta, SBDC assistant, discussed a project she is coordinating with the Brainerd Lakes Area Chambers of Commerce to help small-business owners recognize what investments in technology may improve their operations.
The congressman heard a presentation from Paul Cibuzar, an SBDC consultant, and Bob Hanson, Customized Training representative at the Business and Industry Center, about a unique project designed to assist area businesses in obtaining federal government contracts.
"This was a great opportunity to showcase the efforts and talents of the SBDC counselors in our region," said Bergman. "It is clear Congressman Oberstar recognizes the value of the SBDC and supports the work we do for the business community."
