The state cross country ski meet, instead of the cross country running meet, could have been conducted at the University of Minnesota golf course. Despite the snowy conditions, sophomore Turena Johnson was 11th in 12:37.4 and teammate Jaime Mueller was 23rd.

A Minneapolis man was arrested last night after he allegedly held a Pequot Lakes family at gunpoint for several hours. Law enforcement officials are investigating a possible link between the suspect and the kidnapping of the same family last month.

Winston Borden, young Brainerd attorney, swept into the office of state senator in yesterday's election, ousting 30-year veteran Gordon Rosenmeier 10,888 to 8,040. Don Samuelson held on to his state representative's seat against Felix Janacek.

Heavy, dense smoke from a burning peat bog, held close to the ground by a heavy fog, created a tremendous traffic hazard in Brainerd and surrounding highways last night. Traffic heading south was rerouted by Brainerd police under orders from the state.

Maestro Lombardi, with the Range Symphony Orchestra, will be heard at the Brainerd High School auditorium on Sunday. Music lovers, business and professional leaders are giving liberal support, as are the girls of the American Legion Auxiliary Band.

E.C. Bane, the real estate man, has returned from a hunting trip in the Mille Lacs Lake region. While near Garrison he shot a large black eagle whose wings, when extended, measure over six feet.
