20 years ago (1989)

(Photo) Sixteen-year-old Dan Cluever of Brainerd registered a 120-pound, 4-point buck at the Log Cabin Restaurant at 9:20 a.m. Saturday in downtown Brainerd. It was his first deer. The first deer registered in the contest was shot by Duain Guin of Brainerd.

30 years ago (1979)

In an unexpected election turnabout, incumbent Ward 1 councilwoman Mary Koep has filed for an at-large council post. Koep, who has represented Ward 1 since 1970, will vie for one of two council seats now held by Frank Murray and Don O'Brien.

40 years ago (1969)

A crowd that filled the council chambers and spilled into the hallway discussed, argued and berated fluoridation for two hours before the city council. Rep. Don Samuelson suggested they discuss the matter further with state officials.

60 years ago (1949)

Myer "Whitey" Skoog of Brainerd, and second year basketball star at the University of Minnesota, has been elected captain of the team, it was announced by coach Ozzie Cowles. Skoog, a junior, was an all-conference forward last year.

80 years ago (1929)

Two Brainerd high school students were peppered on the back with shot from a .12-gauge shotgun while hunting ducks on the east side of Gull Lake. They were walking on the shore when the gun, resting against a tree, was blown over by wind and discharged.

100 years ago (1909)

D.M. Clark and Co., which was burned out in last week's fire, is opening their hardware business in the store room next to Murphy's plumbing establishment. Their undertaking department has reopened.
