OTHER OPINION: AFRICA
A familiar crisis is unfolding in one of the world's most miserable places. Rebel soldiers are camped outside the city of Goma, in northeastern Congo - a region plagued by ethnic warfare and unspeakable violence against civilians for most of the past 15 years. Tens of thousands of refugees have been pouring in and out of Goma, where they are vulnerable to robbery, rape or murder at the hands of Congolese troops that are supposed to be defending them. Meanwhile, United Nations peacekeepers - part of the largest such deployment in the world, with the mandate to use force to protect the population - spend more time dodging stones from residents enraged by their fecklessness than fulfilling their mission.
VOX POP
I have come to a dead end in trying to find a way to dispose of old medication in Brainerd. It seems that pharmacies here do not have programs in place to deal with them. Because of the death of one parent, and moving the other, I have many meds, and don't want to dispose of them myself. Are there any sources in Brainerd that deal with disposing of large amounts of medications? Anyone?

The best campaign I've covered
WASHINGTON - I remember the precise moment when I became convinced that this presidential campaign was going to be the best I'd ever covered. It was Saturday afternoon, Dec. 8, 2007. I stood in the lobby of Hy-Vee Hall, the big convention center in Des Moines, watching an endless stream of men, women and children come down the escalators from the network of skywalks that link the downtown business blocks of Iowa's capital. They were bundled in winter coats against the chilly temperatures, and the mood was festive - like a tailgate party for a football game. But the lure here was not a sporting contest; it was a political rally.
