20 years ago (1989)

Crow Wing County Commissioner Mary Koep questioned not so much the availability of $5,000 to keep the Paul Bunyan Arboretum afloat for three months, but the wisdom of giving money to a floundering private enterprise when the county could take it over.

30 years ago (1979)

A dramatic second-game comeback helped coach Carol Chamberlain's Brainerd Warrior volleyball team to a 2-0 upset victory over Central Lakes Conference champion Alexandria in the quarterfinals of the Region 8AA sub-region tournament.

40 years ago (1969)

Carl Erickson, county attorney, said today he will move to dismiss the manslaughter case against Loyal Lundstrom of Merrifield rather than put the families through the anguish of another trial. The Minnesota Supreme Court overturned the 1967 lower court conviction.

60 years ago (1949)

Deer hunting boundaries have been announced for the northern deer hunting zone, open for five days from Nov. 12 through 16, for hunting with all legal firearms or bow and arrow. Hours are sunrise to sunset with a limit of one deer of either sex.

80 years ago (1929)

The Brainerd High School football team goes into its final week of practice and will close its away schedule with a game at Milaca next Friday. The final game of the season will be played here Nov. 11 as Brainerd hosts undefeated Crosby-Ironton.

100 years ago (1909)

E.E. Husemann had a crew of men at work last evening in the third story of the Citizens State Bank building, with carpenters trying to keep ahead of the decorators. He is making a replacement for the three lodge halls destroyed in last week's huge fire.
