BEMIDJI -- Robert Carl Schmidt, 72, of Bemidji, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at his home in Bemidji.
Funeral services will be 4 p.m. today, Nov. 3, 2003, at the First Assembly of God Church in Bemidji with the Rev. Vern Lathe officiating. Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
He was born Nov. 22, 1930, in Woodland, Minn., the son of John and Magdalena (Schlemmer) Schmidt. He moved with his family as a child to Brainerd, Minn., where he was raised and educated. He married Arlene Schwendeman on Dec. 19, 1953, in Brainerd. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1954 aboard the U.S.S. Fechteler and the U.S.S. Henry W. Tucker during the Korean War. He attended NDSU from 1954-1958 and graduated as a mechanical engineer. He worked as a mechanical engineer in several industries moving to different areas of the West and Midwest. He worked at Magnetic Peripherals in Bemidji from its concept until 1986 when he retired because of medical reasons.
He loved airplanes and learned to fly a small float plane when he was 15 years old. He had a lifelong love of horses, he started riding when he was three years old. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, horseback riding, flying and working. He was a devoted family man. He attended the First Assembly of God Church and had many friends of all ages.
He is survived by his wife Arlene of Bemidji; a daughter, Jana Thompson of Middleton, Wis.; a son, Daniel Robert (Carol) Schmidt of Clear Lake, Iowa; six grandchildren; and a brother, John (Nancy) Schmidt of Plymouth, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Joshua Thompson, parents, a brother, Donald, and two sisters, Norma and Viola.
Casketbearers will be Melvin Bahr, Monte Berend, Byron Lundmark, Gene Rawlyk, Rick Petrowski and Lowell Vaughn.
Memorials are preferred to North Country Hospice of Bemidji.
