PERHAM - Gavin Kadlec rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown as No. 3 Staples-Motley lost a tight 16-14 Section 8-3A semifinal game against No. 2 Perham.
The Cardinals ended the regular season undefeated and ranked fifth in 3A but could not keep up with the Perham passing attack as the Yellowjackets threw for 244 yards.
The teams were knotted 8-8 at halftime. After a third-quarter Perham touchdown, Staples-Motley's Dylan Hales returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a score but the Cardinals came up short on the 2-point conversion run for the tie.
