MORA -- The Pierz Pioneers volleyball teams' ride through the Subsection 18, Section 5, Class 2A tournament ended in the championship game Thursday as they were defeated by the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels in three games, 15-5, 16-14, 15-5.
After losing the first game, the Pioneers (23-5), behind Ashley Athman's three kills, shot out to a slim 13-10 lead. But the Rebels would not be denied as they rallied for the comeback win.
That heartbreaking loss in the second game seemed to take the wind out of the Pioneers' sails as ML-WR scored eight straight points to take an 11-4 lead in the final game, which Pierz could not overcome.
Pierz's Nicole Meyer had three of her six kills on the night in the third game. Allyson Kloss, as she's done all year, led the Pioneers with eight kills and added four blocks.
Athman had five kills and five blocks while Kari Block had five kills, four blocks and 17 set assists.
"I could not be more proud of the team," Pierz coach Kurt Stumpf said. "We played extremely hard the entire match. I have to give Moose Lake a lot of credit, they really played well. It just wasn't meant to be."
