AITKIN -- Wilma E. Essig, 84, rural Aitkin, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin.
She was born Sept. 30, 1916, in Golden, Iowa, to Oscar and Hulda (Maack) Manson. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Florida and then to New London where she attended school. She married Russell Essig on Nov. 4, 1936, in Atwater. They moved to the Minneapolis area where they worked. They moved to Hazelton Township about 24 years ago when they retired. Her husband died in December 1999. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Deerwood and the Garrison Lioness.
Survivors include five daughters, Janet Mia, Myrtle Creek, Ore., JoAnn Holmin, Aitkin, Gloria Stolp, Elk River, Barbara Horejsi, Henderson, Nev., and Rita Ray, Coon Rapids; three sons, Walter Essig, Milan, William Essig, West Fargo, N.D., and Janice Drew, Falkland, N.C.; one sister, Verna Peterson, Spicer; two brothers, Norman and Earl Manson, both of New London; 39 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband, one sister, two brothers and two grandchildren died earlier.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Salem Lutheran Church in Deerwood with Rev. Greg Meyer officiating. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Friday in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Crystal. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin and for one hour before services Friday at the church.
