Pillager upsets PR-B

PINE RIVER - Senior middle hitter Breeanna Deyo came up with the big play Pillager coach Christine Ganley called for to seal a 3-1 upset victory for the No. 3 Huskies over the second-seeded Pine River-Backus Tigers during Friday's East Subsection 5-1A quarterfinals.

"I told the girls I need great plays from everyone of you," Ganley said about her timeout in the fourth game. "Then Breeanna stepped up and blocked their middle hitter for the winner."

Emily Doss was 25 of 26 serving with six ace serves, 16 set assists and eight digs.

Pillager's Bristy Bourgoin added 19 digs and Jackie White had 12 kills and 16 digs.

Katie Wangberg led the Tigers with 11 kills, 21 set assists, five digs, three blocks and an ace serve. Crysta Christensen and Kendra Hamilton each had 10 kills for PR-B ,which finishes 16-9.

WADENA - Courtney Volkmann amassed 18 set assists, seven kills, seven digs and seven ace serves as the top-seeded Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines maneuvered past the fifth-seeded Pelican Rapids Vikings 3-0 in the South Subsection 8-2A semifinal Friday.

Brittney Noon added 10 kills, three digs, three blocks and three ace serves, while Kelly DeFoe had a team-high eight blocks for the Wolverines.
