20 years ago (1989)

Nine jobless years ended for Harold Speed when he found an employer who measures performance instead of handicaps. But Jeff Zernov, owner of Zercom Manufacturing, doesn't want credit. We don't have handicapped employees, they're good and reliable.

30 years ago (1979)

The Minnesota Council for the Handicapped has named Bobby Collette of rural Brainerd as one of three winners of the Handicapped Person of the Year award. Collette, confined to a wheelchair due to an accident, is a professional fishing guide.

40 years ago (1969)

Brainerd is still dumping raw sewage into the Mississippi River during times of high water and rainstorms. The problem occurs where sanitary and storm sewers interconnect northeast of Roosevelt Field.

60 years ago (1949)

100 years ago (1909)

Arthur Steinhagen is in the hospital with a broken jaw as the result of a row at the corner of Front and Seventh Streets at 9 p.m. Saturday. He was knocked down and kicked in the jaw.
