BHS' Smith top qualifier
GIRLS' DIVING
WILLMAR - Brainerd's Sam Smith was the top qualifier after eight dives in the Central Lakes Conference diving prelims Thursday night.
With three dives remaining Saturday, Smith is No. 1 with 252.95 points. Teammates Tiffany Etterman and Katy Etterman are seventh and 10th heading into the finals, which includes the top 16 divers in the prelims. Brainerd's Allison Reuer finished 17th.
"(Allison) had to sneak in another good dive or two to be included in the top 16," Warriors diving coach Mary Streiff said. "Tiffany and Katy are in a group of about 10 kids that are pretty tight, within about 15 points of each other. They've got a strong three dives left. I look for them to move up in the finals.
Sam Smith is in first place with three dives remaining.
"Sam is diving OK. She's got three strong finals dives too. I look for Sam to increase her lead coming out of the finals."
