Completely random slice of pop culture
This is going to sound kind of random, but it's about time we have a black man as a leader. I'm talking, of course, about Hootie & the Blowfish frontman Darius Rucker topping the country singles charts with "Don't Think I Don't Think About It."

Look into your crystal ball: 'Strange' days loom at Central Lakes College Theatre
Asylum: The Strange Case of Mary Lincoln" is a musical, but if you want colorful costumes and upbeat music, look elsewhere. The story will unfold on a dimly lit Dryden Theatre stage, and Mary Lincoln's wardrobe is all black since the death of her husband, President Lincoln.

Correction/clarification
The Brainerd Dispatch incorrectly typed a word in a description of Frank Marshall Davis, an acquaintance of young Barack Obama, in Wednesday's letter by Dolores Zaske of Pine River. The sentence should have referred to Davis as a "communist sympathizer" and not a "community sympathizer."

What we've learned about McCain
WASHINGTON - As we near the end of another presidential campaign, it is useful to ask ourselves what we have learned about the candidates that we did not know before. When you reflect back on all the rallies, the speeches, the ads and the debates, what insights have we gained about their goals, their methods, their characters? I will turn to Barack Obama next, but today's subject is John McCain.

OUR OPINION: AMENDMENT
It's called the Legacy Amendment - shorthand for Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment. The measure is on the ballot in Tuesday's election. Unfortunately, the only legacy that it will surely preserve is that of a state Legislature and executive branch that are unwilling to make tough decisions.

Open Forum
I know this is an old topic but I thought it should be revived for a bit. I really think that Minnesota did a good thing by putting the Freedom to Breathe Act into effect. I know that a lot of smokers complain about it, but I don't think they realize what they are doing. Why should I, a non-smoker, be subjected to other people smoking? It affects my health and the health of my daughter who is three years old and has asthma. If people want to smoke, more power to them but please don't do it around me and my family. I think that Minnesota, among other states, is doing a good job at trying to keep their citizens health in mind when they passed this act and ones like it. I know it is a pain for some people. In the long run, however, if you think about it, it really is the best thing for all people. If people cannot smoke in a restaurant maybe they will just find it too much of a hassle to go outside to smoke and skip that cigarette to spend a little more time with their families. No matter what some people say, smoking and second hand smoke does cause health problems. Bravo to pass this act. It will hopefully make our state a healthier one.
