ST. PAUL (AP) -- Macalester College President Michael S. McPherson said Wednesday he'll leave the school at the end of the academic year to take a new job.
McPherson said he'll become president of Spencer Foundation, a Chicago-based non-profit organization that funds research aimed at understanding and improving education.
"The opportunity to provide leadership in efforts to improve our understanding of education is one that I simply could not pass up," McPherson said in a statement. "While this is a wonderful opportunity, it does not make the prospect of leaving Macalester any easier."
McPherson became Macalester's president in 1996. He formerly was dean of the faculty at Williams College in Massachusetts.
