Fishing/hunting
OUTDOOR NEWS
LAKE MILLE LACS
East - Sucker minnows are producing muskies in five feet off Big Point and along the shoreline breaks on the south end of the lake. Walleye reports are minimal, and Wahkon Bay is giving up a few good-sized perch. Grouse hunting has been decent, but duck numbers have dropped during the past week.
West - There hasn't been a lot of anglers on the lake during midday hours. Some are finding success at night trolling crankbaits along the shorelines and points, but even that bite hasn't been consistent every evening. Look to the bays for northern pike; muskie action remains limited.
LEECH LAKE AREA
Jigs and minnows are turning a few walleyes off the points and shoreline breaks in eight to 12 feet of water. You'll find perch on the flats and points in six to 12 feet, and most are being caught on minnows. Crappies continue to be found suspended in Sucker Bay and Shingobee Bay. Duck numbers seem to have dropped a bit during the past week, but there are plenty of grouse to be had in the big-timber areas.
LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH
There haven't been a lot of anglers on the lake. Those that are going out are finding walleyes on the points and shoreline breaks in eight to 10 feet with minnows. An occasional pod of good-sized perch also can be found in these areas. Grouse hunting remains favorable, and the main lake is holding some ducks.
BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA
A slowly presented jig tipped with aa redtail or shiner minnow is turning walleyes in 18 to 40 feet on Gull Lake, North Long Lake, and Pelican Lake. Northern pike are being found in these same lakes from the weedlines out to 25 feet, but panfish action has been limited to a few crappies suspended over deep water on Gull.
CROSBY AREA
Walleye fishing remains productive with a jig and minnow in 20 to 22 feet on Rabbit Lake, Serpent Lake, and the Mississippi River. Trout action remains strong with crankbaits at about 40 feet down on the pits such as Pennington, Huntington, Portsmouth, and Manual. Grouse hunters continue to find success, and there are ducks to be had on the river and backwater rice beds. Archery hunters have commented that deer have become more active, especially the larger bucks.
CROSS LAKE AREA
The walleye bite on the Whitefish Chain has cooled off and the weather has limited anglers from getting out. Look to the weedlines with crankbaits for a few fish. Spinnerbaits thrown along the weedlines of most lakes are producing northern pike. Grouse hunters are taking some birds, but still report a lot of foliage. A few more deer have been registered, and duck hunters are seeing more birds.
CUSHING AREA
Look for walleyes in 30 to 40 feet on Lake Alexander, Fish Trap Lake, and Lake Shamineau. Redtails and crawlers have been the key on Lindy Rigs. Muskie action is strong, with large sucker minnows producing fish along the shallow weedlines of Shamineau and Alexander. Hunting reports have been limited to a few grouse and a couple of turkeys being shot.
EMILY AREA
Trolling Rapalas on Ruth Lake has produced northern pike in 18 feet. Crappies and sunfish have started hitting on Mitchell Lake in 15 to 18 feet. Deer registrations have gone up this week, and there seems to be better deer movement, duck numbers remain decent, and the leaves continue to limit grouse hunters.
HACKENSACK AREA
A few walleyes are being caught on Birch Lake on slowly presented minnows in 20 feet. Panfish, bass, and muskie reports have been poor. Hunting reports have been limited, but this area received a lot of rain that hindered outdoor adventures.
