BHS Bands in concert Nov. 6
The Brainerd High School Bands will present their annual Fall Concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 at Tornstrom Auditorium, Washington Educational Services Building, in Brainerd.
Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors and free for children 5 and younger.
The program will include the Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, Concert Band and Symphonic Band. Selections will include works by Sausedo, Balmages, Williams, Strommen and Ward.
Ouska and Aleckson to perform Nov. 7
LITTLE FALLS - Folk duo Jim Ouska and Jane Aleckson will perform at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Great River Arts Center in downtown Little Falls as part of the Unplugged Concerts series.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for those older than 60 and younger than 18; there is a $1 discount for GRAA members. Tickets are available by phone at (320) 632-0960 and at the door.
Ouska and Aleckson perform blues, swing, folk, funk and jazz on guitar and upright bass. Their music has been featured on MPR's "The Current" and other radio stations. In 2004, they recorded the soundtrack for "By Heart," an independent movie filmed in Wisconsin.
Various bands to perform Nov. 8
HACKENSACK - Various metalcore, metal, and progressive bands will perform at 5 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Hackensack Community Center.
Admission is $8.
Bands will include My My Misfire, Lost in Prague, Among the Atony, Earn Your Stripes, Patience of the Hero, Bleeding Skyline, When Men Rise Up at the Sound of Birds and Cape May.

Legacy Chorale fall concerts announced
The Legacy Chorale of Greater Minnesota, under the direction of Sarah Aamot-Lundin, will present its fall concerts, "Deep Peace" at 4 p.m. Nov. 9 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter.
Tickets are $10 for adults and free for veterans and students 18 and younger. Tickets can be purchased at the Dispatch in Brainerd and the Great River Arts Center in Little Falls or by calling 820-6034 or (888) 899-6034.
"Deep Peace" will include three sets of choral music, both a cappella and accompanied. The program will include choral classics, patriotic tunes, folk songs and spirituals. The accompanist is Laura Raedeke of Nisswa.

BHS Orchestras in concert Nov. 11
The Brainerd High School Orchestras will present their annual Benefit Concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 at Tornstrom Auditorium, Washington Educational Services Building, in Brainerd
The Brainerd High School Sinfonia Orchestra will perform Nov. 11 at Tornstrom Auditorium in Brainerd.
All money donated will go to the Brainerd Sharing Bread Soup Kitchen.
The Sinfonia Orchestra will open with work by American composers Francis Feese and Leonard Bernstein, "Toccata" by Baroque Italian composer Girolamo Frescobaldi and "Furioso" by American composer Robert W. Smith.
The Chamber Orchestra will perform "An English Suite" by English composer Sir Hubert Parry, "Spanish Dance" by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, "Songs Without Words" by German composer Felix Mendelssohn, the first movement from "Symphonie No. 7" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and two movements from the "Suite for Strings" by American composer John Rutter.
Two members of The Clintons to play
John McLellan and Josh Keehr of The Clintons will perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Last Turn Saloon in downtown Brainerd.
Admission is free.
The Clintons are a four-piece rock band from Montana that is currently touring the Midwest. The band's new album is "Have Another."

PLCT's 'Birdie' cast announced
PEQUOT LAKES - Pequot Lakes Community Theatre has announced the cast for its musical production of "Bye Bye Birdie," to be staged Nov. 14-23 at the Pequot Lakes High School auditorium.
In 1960, Conrad Birdie (Mitchell Dallman, Jenkins), the world's most popular rock 'n' roll singer, is about to be drafted into the Army. His managers, Albert (Tim Leagjeld, Pine River) and Rose (Wendy DeGeest, Brainerd), concoct a publicity scheme to have him give a good-bye kiss to one of his small-town fans, 15-year-old Kim McAfee (Marissa Thorson, Brainerd), on "The Ed Sullivan Show."
The resultant uproar involves Kim's family (Thor Thorson, Brainerd; Kimberly Kairies, Pequot Lakes; and McKenzie Dale, Pequot Lakes), her hometown boyfriend Hugo (Charlie Cook, Pequot Lakes), Albert's mother (Judy Larsen, Pequot Lakes) and the teens and adults of Sweet Apple, Ohio.
"Bye Bye Birdie" is directed by Michael Sander (Pine River), with choreography by Amy Borash (Baxter) and DeGeest. Sets are by Leagjeld and costumes are by Pat Dullum (Pequot Lakes) and Annette Koch. Lauren Nickisch (Pequot Lakes) is the vocal director, Andrea Besnett (Breezy Point) is the orchestra director, Renee Anderson (Pequot Lakes) is the accompanist, Jenny Moon (Pequot Lakes) is the technical director and Meredith Bjorkquist (Crosslake) is the stage manager.
Bookin' It open house slated Sunday

Breining to give book talk Nov. 10
CROSSLAKE - Greg Breining will speak in the Book Talk series at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Crosslake Community Center.

The St. Paul author, who has a cabin on Eagle Lake, has written books, essays and articles dealing with travel, nature, fishing, kayaking and skiing. Breining will read from his new book, "A Hard Water World: Ice Fishing and Why We Do It," and will have copies available for purchase and signing.

Pillager author awarded for book
PILLAGER - Ceil Stetson of Pillager was recently honored as a finalist in the military history category of USABookNews.com's National Best Book Awards for "Dear Sergeant Honey."
The book, a compilation of Stetson's mothers writings while serving in the Women's Army Corps in World War II, was released by Infinity Publishing in August.

Club's holiday show opens Tuesday
The Brainerd Area Art Club's Holiday Art Show and Sale will open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday in Gallery 119 at the Franklin Art Center in Brainerd. The show will continue from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 6, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 8 (artists' reception) and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 11 and 13.

Serpent Lake art show slated
CROSBY - The Serpent Lake Area Artists Show and Sale will be from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Hallett Community Center in Crosby.
