Lewis Neal Childs, 87, Brainerd, died Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at his home. He was born on Nov. 9, 1921, in West Concord, Minn., to Herbert R. and Ivah (Thrall) Childs. He was raised near Akeley, Minn., although his family once lived in Missouri and later southern Minnesota. He served in World War II entering the Army Aug. 26, 1942. When returning from his tour of duty he met and married Eileen Marion Vos on Oct. 1, 1947, at White Oak Church. They raised their family in Excelsior, Minn. Lewis worked at Glen Lake Sanitarium where he was employed as the plant maintenance foreman for 38 years. After retiring Lewis and Eileen moved to Brainerd in 1988. After Eileen's death in November 1990, Lewis continued to live in the Brainerd/Baxter area where he enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and neighbors.
He is survived by sons, Larry (Jan) Childs, of Lindstrom, Minn., and Lyle Childs, of Mound, Minn.; daughter, Wanda (Wayne) Nelson, of Braham, Minn.; grandchildren, Laura, Mindy, Becky, Renee, Angie, Joshua, Cody and Katelyn; and four great-grandchildren. Also, survived by one brother, David Childs, of St. Michael, Minn.
Lewis was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers and one sister.
Lewis was a loving husband and a great father who will be missed greatly.
Services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at 2 p.m. at White Oak Bible Chapel in Chamberlain, Minn. Interment will be in the White Oak Cemetery in Chamberlain. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
