Staples-Motley finishes season

MINNEAPOLIS - The Staples-Motley doubles team of Sara Dezell-Miranda Milless completed a successful weekend in the Class 1A state tournament Saturday by capturing the consolation championship at the Reed Sweatt Tennis Center.

Dezell-Milless defeated the Blake School team of Kirsten Seeland-Mary Allen in three games to take the consolation title.

In singles action, the Cardinals' Katie Edin took home the consolation championship with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Andrea Allis of United South Central.

Dezell-Milless and Katie Edin went 6-1 at state. They won three of four matches in individual competition and all three of their matches in the team tournament.

"They're all seniors and they had great careers," Cardinals coach Kevin Coughlin said. "They ended their careers with a win. Not many people can do that at a state tournament."

Katie Edin matched up against Aitkin's Kelsey Klucas in the consolation semifinals and earned a berth in the consolation final with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

The Cardinals' Abby Edin also participated in singles action while the S-M team of Skye Coughlin-Emma Koskiniemi competed in doubles.
