The Central Lakes College Raiders volleyball team isn't used to finishing second.
But the Raiders are happy about having an opportunity to qualify for the NJCAA Division III national tournament.
CLC will have that opportunity Friday when it hosts Northland for the Region 13B championship and a berth at nationals. The Raiders beat Northland 3-1 and 3-0 in the regular season.
Ridgewater and Fergus Falls play for the 13A championship in Wisconsin.
In the state championship match Sunday at Willmar, the Raiders won the first two games before host Ridgewater stormed back to capture the last three and the title.
"We finished second to a very good team," Raiders coach Jane Peterson said. "I thought we played well and pretty consistently. We didn't have a major breakdown.
"Ridgewater is a very aggressive team. They're non-stop aggressive, they're bigger than us. We had a very good effort and a good attitude. It was very close. We were ahead in the fourth game but couldn't quite win it. We had our chance. Hopefully, we'll get another chance."
Raiders named to the all-tournament team include Lisa Kurtz, Krista Meyer and Rachel Voeltz.
Kurtz, Meyer and Voeltz also made the All-Northern Division team. Heather Feldewerd made the second team.
In Sunday's semifinals the Raiders swept Anoka-Ramsey.
"We were aggressive late in the game and the scores were close," Peterson said. "That was a good boost for us, games that we had to work hard at. We finished very aggressively.
"Anoka-Ramsey is also a very good defensive team. There were some very good defensive teams here. It was hard to put the ball down. There were lots of long rallies we had to play, which makes for good volleyball."
CLC won its first two matches in pool play Friday before losing 3-0 to Fergus Falls.
"I was really happy with the way we responded to losing to Fergus Falls," Peterson said. "That was an upset. It was hard for us and it wasn't easy to recover from. I was proud we could recover from that and didn't let it affect us today."
