Lise Holte, Brainerd, received a $1,500 college scholarship in the third annual Citi/Scholastic National Essay Contest, a joint effort between Citi's Credit-ED Program and Scholastic Inc., the global children's publishing and media company. The contest required high school students to submit a 500-word essay describing an event or experience that had a positive influence on the way they approached financial management. Contestants were asked to outline the most helpful thing they learned and describe how it led to the development of specific skills.
Spencer Sundberg, Baxter, and Brandon Frisch and Gunther Zajic, Brainerd, have accepted $1,000 transfer scholarships from Bemidji Sate University for the 2007-2008 academic year. Sundberg is a sophomore majoring in business administration. Frisch is a junior majoring in accounting and Zajic is a junior studying sports management. Transfer scholarships are available to Minnesota community college transfer students who have completed associate degrees with a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
Loretta Steffen, Backus, is a member of the Northern Student newspaper staff at Bemidji State University for the fall semester of 2007. She is a freshman majoring in creative and professional writing, and is a staff writer.
Ashley Langer, daughter of Anthony and Janelle Langer, Pierz, was selected Student of the Month for October, a recognition program sponsored by the Youth Activities Committee of Brainerd Elks Lodge No. 615.
Lisa Holte, daughter of David and Ellen Holte, Brainerd, Brett Severson, son of William Severson and Cheryl Severson, Brainerd, and Crystal Wright, daughter of John and Jeanne Wright, Brainerd, will tour the upper Midwest Oct. 26-Nov. 4 with the internationally acclaimed Concordia College Orchestra from Concordia College, Moorhead.
Megan Hamdorf, daughter of Bruce and DeeDee Hamdorf, Baxter, finished the past semester with honors from the Minnesota School of Business. She is studying to become a veterinary technician.
