WHIPHOLT -- Two 15-year-old girls were killed and three others injured Saturday in a single-vehicle accident on Highway 200 near Whipholt.
The two girls, Kelly Maria Gilbertson, Akeley, and Amanda McKenzie Archer, Walker, were pronounced dead at the scene, the State Patrol reported.
Gilbertson and Archer were passengers in a vehicle driven by Anthena Hurd, 17, Walker. Hurd and another passenger, Erin Plinke, 16, Walker, were transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids. A fourth passenger, Charlotte Hurd, 15, Walker, was airlifted with serious injuries to a Fargo, N.D., hospital.
The accident happened about 4:21 a.m., the State Patrol reported. Hurd's vehicle was driving eastbound on Highway 200, about five miles east of Highway 371, when her vehicle hit a deer, ran off the road and struck a tree.
None of the girls in the vehicle were wearing their seat belts.
