Northland Arboretum annual meeting planned this Friday

Posted: Wednesday, October 27, 2004

The Northland Arboretum annual meeting will be 7 p.m. Friday.

The event will celebrate the arboretum's 30th year, the opening of the new Trailhead Visitor Center and the arboretum's many dedicated volunteers. Mark Rustad, co-author of the book Brainerd Bound, will be the featured speaker.

The meeting will be at the new Arboretum Visitor Center near the Baxter head of the Paul Bunyan Trail. Appetizers, desserts and beverages will be served. Cost for the event is $15 person.

The arboretum is a non-profit 401(c)3. The arboretum is funded through membership, programs, grants, special gifts and financial support from many local contributors.

Treats, safety items offered by Brainerd Police Department Sunday

The Brainerd Police Department will treat the first 1,000 children beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday with a glow-in-the-dark necklace, a trick-or-treat bag and candy for Halloween when they stop at the station.

Local merchants donating to the event include Deerwood Bank, Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union, First Impression Printing, Johnson Candy, Brainerd Savings and Loan and National Child Safety Council.

YMCA kicks off campaign

The Brainerd Family YMCA kicked off its third annual Y Partners Support Campaign recently with a goal of $40,000. The YMCA's campaign is co-chaired by volunteers Kurt Nelson and Dr. Mike Severson.

Funds from this campaign will provide membership and program assistance to low-income youth and families in our area. This year close to 575 individuals qualified for free or reduced memberships. The Brainerd Family YMCA currently serves more than 3,400 members and 7,000 program participants each year.
