The Brainerd Zonta Club recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.
The Brainerd Zonta Club, chartered on Oct. 6, 1954, celebrated its golden anniversary. Club members presented a skit re-enacting the formation of Zonta International in 1919.
Dressed in period attire, the group of Brainerd Zontians presented this historical retrospective at the District 7 Seminar on Oct. 1-3 at Kavanaugh's. Cast members included Marlene Larson, Carol Munns, Lois Laurence, Dianne Kendall, Amy Lichty, Shirley Schoonover, Lila Moen and Bozena Persons.
Charter members of the Brainerd Club were Beatrice Ross, Dr. Helen Longfellow, Dorothy Warlof, Lucille Avery, Mary Tornstrom, Barbara McPheeters, Frances Hedner, Alice Giesler, Esther Schroeder, Esther Neller, Gertrude Mager, Eleanor Nolan, May Ann Peterson, Pat Kranz, Evelyn Anderson, Edith Erickson, Claire VanEssen, Evelyn Wayt and Maude McMannis.
The charter banquet was Nov. 16, 1954, at Van's Cafe. Fifty years later, the Brainerd Zonta Club holds its noon Wednesday meetings at Ember's Cafe, formerly Van's Cafe.
Service projects for the chartered group of Zontians included scholarships for the practical nursing course from the local junior college, Amelia Earhart scholarship, gifts and money to the Brainerd State School and Hospital and to the Fergus Falls Institution, Crow Wing County Historical Society, Crow Wing County Fair participation and participation in an exchange student project.
In the 50 years of the Brainerd Zonta Club, many contributions have been made to improve the status of women. Recent fund-raisers have supported college scholarships for young women, books for elementary schools, Meta 5 Displaced Homemakers Program and Mid-Minnesota Women's Center.
