CROSSLAKE - The Alzen Family will perform in a gospel bluegrass concert at 10:45 a.m. Sunday and 6 p.m. Sunday at the Crosslake Christian Assembly of God Church. The Alzen family is from Roberts, Wis. They are winners of the Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-time Music Association 2006 Family Area Talent Contest.
The Alzen Family consists of father, Brad, on guitar and vocals; mother, Denise, on harmonica and vocals; and four children, Isaac on upright bass fiddle, Lucas on whiz-bang, AnaLise on mandolin, fiddle and guitar, and Tessa Lyn on fiddle and banjo. The music highlights the singing and playing of the Alzen children and consists of a wide variety of family-oriented old-time music with four-part harmonies.
Trixie's Hawaiian Halloween party set
NISSWA - Trixie's Hawaiian Halloween party will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Community Church in Nisswa. Wear a Halloween costume or island wear.

Kurtz to speak at adult forum
Jan Kurtz will speak on immigration issues at First Congregational United Church of Christ's adult forum 11 a.m. Sunday. Her presentation, entitled "The Changing Face of Central Minnesota" will focus on the impact of immigration on our towns and our economy. She will discuss the myths related to jobs, language acquisition, who pays taxes and the pursuit of citizenship.
Great pumpkin party
Trinity Lutheran Church of Brainerd will have the Great Pumpkin Party from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Admittance is a food shelf donation.
Events are planned for children through fifth grade. They include a cake walk, cookie decorating, games, Boney Boulevard where children collect treats, the Scary Story Room and the Murky Mansion. Supper will be served beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Sola Fidae in concert
CROSSLAKE - The Christian inspirational band Sola Fidae will be in concert at 7 p.m. Sunday at The Log Church (Crosslake Evangelical Free Church) in Crosslake, playing in support of several area church youth groups. Tickets are available from youth group members and will be available at the door. Cost is $5 for adults. Children 8 and under will be admitted for free.
Six students were confirmed recently at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Hillman. They include Brittany Green (front, left), Pastor Cathie Rhodes and Lyndsy Wunderlich, Rachel Block (back, left), Tanner Tetrick, Alex Libby and Bailey East.
Band members include lead vocalist Brad Wallace, along with singers Jacki Kline, Deb Welu and Laurie Pelkey. Instrumentalists Greg Welu (drums), Rick Van Geest (bass guitar), Steve Pelkey (lead guitar), Jay Bungert and Jim Park (rhythm guitars) all hail from various local churches and offer an intriguing mix of high-energy original songs along with traditional hymns and worship songs done in a not necessarily traditional way.
Those attending will find themselves a part of the first live CD recording from Sola Fidae as recording engineers work to compile material for the group's debut album. A portion of the proceeds will go to cover recording expenses.
Sixth annual community fall carnival
STAPLES - The Staples Alliance Church will have its sixth annual community fall carnival from 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday. This is a free event for children up to sixth grade. Evening activities include games, prizes, candy, popcorn, face painting, puppet shows, coffee and treats for the adults and more. The evening will conclude with a drawing for prizes. Fall bazaar and soup luncheon
LITTLE FALLS - Zion Lutheran Church, Little Falls, will have its annual fall bazaar Nov. 3. The bazaar which includes a bakery, grandma's attic, crafts, candy and snacks will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The soup luncheon will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and there will be a variety of soups, homemade breads, dessert and beverage.
Turkey bingo planned
HARDING - Holy Cross Rosary Sodality will have turkey bingo at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Holy Cross Church in Harding. Twenty games for $5. Free lunch.
Results from annual CROP Walk
The 2007 annual CROP Walk resulted in $8,934.16 raised for local hunger programs, the Salvation Army Food Shelf and the Sharing Bread Soup Kitchen at about $1,100. Ninety people participated in the walk even though it rained.
Descendants fear development near site of massacre
MOUNTAIN MEADOWS, Utah (AP) - Preservationists and the descendants of settlers slaughtered by Mormons and Paiute Indians here 150 years ago worry that land around the massacre site could become a hot real estate commodity.
"It has always been a pastoral site, and we don't want to see a Burger King or Blockbuster go in," said Robert Briggs of the Mountain Meadows Association, one of three groups with ties to massacre descendants.
