Rochester Lourdes made it six consecutive Class 1A girls' team tennis state championships with a decisive 7-0 victory over the Staples-Motley Cardinals at the Nicollet Tennis Center in Minneapolis Thursday.
Lourdes did not lose a single match in the tournament. It was the second time the schools faced off in the championship match.
"They're a different level," said Cardinals coach Kevin Coughlin about Lourdes. "Everyone played their best. They played with poise and confidence. Jacque Peterson played two tough matches and fought and fought and fought. You would think she got kicked in the dirt but she didn't. Everyone was that way."
The Cardinals finished third two years ago. Three years ago Lourdes also beat S-M 7-0 in the final.
"Three years ago we won 22 games, this year we won 21 (against Lourdes)," said Coughlin. "We were playing a better team this year. They had a lot more seniors and I think we overall played better.
"This was a little better showing, plus we beat a private school in the semifinals pretty soundly."
In the semifinals earlier in the day, the Cardinals defeated St. Paul Academy 5-2. Jenna Vogel, Emma Pipek and Kim Mosack won singles matches for S-M. The No. 1 doubles team of Milless-Hoffmann and the No. 2 team of Burrows-DiGiovanni also were triumphant.
"We got especially good play from our doubles," Coughlin said. "Our two doubles team went three sets against Rochester and in the semifinal they dominated. They had a great day."
It was the sixth state appearance in 12 years for S-M, which was ranked third in the final 1A state poll.
"We went to win and we played an outstanding team and they played great and beat us," Coughlin said. "But we played well."
