DEERWOOD -- Russell L. Swearingen, 87, Deerwood, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Cuyuna Regional Care Center in Crosby.
He was born June 27, 1914, in Groton, S.D., to William and Cora (Carper) Swearingen. He married Eleanore Hulda Palmer on June 30, 1939, in Sisseton, S.D. He was a World War II Army veteran, a Bataan Death March survivor and prisoner of war survivor while serving with Company A, 194th Tank Battalion. He was a member of the Walter Scott Erickson American Legion Post No. 557 of Deerwood and the VFW Post 1647 of Brainerd. He was a retired member of local 292 IBEW of Minneapolis. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Crosby.
Survivors include two sons, Donald Arm, Alexandria, and Danny Swearingen, Coon Rapids; a daughter, Karen Barnes, Baxter; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Sarah Endres, Seattle, Gerry Badger, Baxter, and Katherine Jewel, Palm Springs, Calif.; and a stepsister, Bernice Britton, Brainerd.
His wife; a daughter, Arlene Benson; and five brothers, Eldon, Mike, Gilbert, Gordon and Bill Swearingen, died earlier.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Crosby with the Rev. Paul Mattson officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby with military honors provided by Walter Scott Erickson American Legion Post 557 of Deerwood.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today at Koop Funeral Home in Crosby and an hour before services Friday at the church.
