The Crow Wing County Fair Association's annual meeting will be Nov. 1 at the Brainerd American Legion Club.

Road repair closes highway in Aitkin
AITKIN - Aitkin city crews will be working on an emergency sanitary sewer repair under Highway 169/210 in Aitkin from Wednesday through Nov. 2, weather permitting.

ACCIDENTS
BAXTER - Three people were injured following a two-vehicle collision about 5:45 p.m. Sunday at Highway 371 and Crow Wing County Road 49 in Baxter, the Baxter Police Department reported.

Meg is a spayed female beagle mix. She's about 6 years old and came to Heartland Animal Rescue Team as a stray. Meg is a small, loving dog who enjoys lounging in her bed.

Brainerd freshmen second in tourney
The Brainerd freshmen volleyball team finished second Oct. 13 at the Bemidji tournament. Brainerd went 7-1 in pool play, defeating Bagley (2-0), Pine River (2-0) and Bemidji II (2-0) and splitting with Lake of the Woods (1-1). Brainerd lost to Bemidji I, 21-15, 21-18. OCTOBER 24 - 100 years ago (1907) - Julius Kruse, of Lone Tree, Iowa, is in the city and has just closed up the purchase of two fine farms. One farm consists of 200 acres and the price paid was $4,500 cash. The other farm of 200 acres he paid $4000.

Baxter resident sues over citizenship delay
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A dentist for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe is suing the federal government because immigration officials failed to grant him citizenship within the 120 days set out by law after he passed his naturalization exams.

Open Forum
Much is made about teacher cuts and classroom overcrowding, and these issues are indeed serious, and very real. But in addition, we owe it to the children of our community to consider the cost of cutting activities that have as much to do with education and preparation for life as books and test scores. I'm talking about athletics, band, choir, debate and dozens of other programs that could - and more than likely will - be cut due to funding shortfalls.

Open Forum
It is as a proud 2006 graduate of the Brainerd School District that I write this letter in support of the upcoming Independent School District 181 levy. Brainerd is known statewide for its quality education. Students in the 181 district receive a quality of education few students are fortunate enough to obtain.

Now that we have a smoking ban in bars and restaurants, I wonder if the state could do anything about smokers using the world as their ashtray. I suppose they believe that they should be able to throw their butts anywhere they like.
