Pequot Lakes advances in Section 7A

AITKIN -- The ninth-seeded Pequot Lakes Patriots knocked off the No. 8 Aitkin Gobblers 3-1 in the opening round of the Section 7, Class 1A volleyball tournament Monday.

The Patriots claimed the first game 15-12. Aitkin rallied for a 15-6 win in the second. Pequot Lakes won the last two games 16-14, 15-6.

In the third game, Carly Blanksma checked in for the Patriots and scored the final three points.

Julie Redebaugh had 13 digs, seven kills, four ace tips, two blocks and two aces for the Patriots. Teammate Jackie Heslop was 13-14 serving, including four aces, and had 24 set assists, 17 digs, three ace tips and a block.

STAPLES -- The Staples-Motley Cardinals finished the regular season with a 15-1, 15-13, 15-10 victory over Menahga in non-conference volleyball Monday.

Nicole Bender led the Cardinals with 19-20 serving, 22 sets assists and a block. Michelle Honek added nine kills while Beth Hoffert tallied three blocks.

LaPORTE -- Laporte outlasted the Verndale Pirates 14-16, 16-14, 15-13, 15-9 in non-conference volleyball Monday.

Kayla White led the Pirates as she accumulated 10 kills, 13 blocks, 11 digs and six ace serves.

"We just had too many errors -- missed serves, bad serve receptions and far too many attack errors," Verndale coach Kelly Youngbauer said. "We hope to resolve these problems before our playoff game Thursday."
