Staples-Motley rallies to beat Breckenridge

STAPLES - The Staples-Motley Cardinals rallied from a 27-26 deficit to beat the Breckenridge Cowboys 34-27 in a Heart O'Lakes Conference South Division regular-season ending game Wednesday.

S-M, ranked fifth in Class 3A, trailed by one when the Cowboys' Joe Johnson ran 18 yards for a score with 6:11 remaining.

Brandon Wing's 11-yard gain on fourth and 10 set up the game-winning 37-yard TD run by the Cardinals' Blake Petrich with 3:48 left.

Dillon Hales rushed seven times for 154 yards for the Cardinals. Quarterback Alex Jansson completed 4 of 6 passes for 105 yards. The Cardinals had 546 yards in total offense, 441 rushing.

The unbeaten Cardinals received the No. 3 seed in the Section 8-3A playoffs and will host No. 6 East Grand Forks Tuesday night.
