Brainerd education advisory council to meet Monday
The Brainerd School District Community Education Advisory Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in Room 200 at the Washington Educational Services Building.
Brainerd school committee to discuss budget Wednesday
The Brainerd School District Finance Committee will meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Washington Educational Services Building to discuss the 2006-07 budget.
Peace groups to mark 2,000 military deaths in Iraq with vigil
Two Brainerd area anti-war groups plan to mark the 2,000th U.S. military fatality in the Iraq war with a candlelight vigil.
As of Thursday, the Brainerd Area Coalition for Peace and Central Lakes College People Uniting for Peace estimated the death toll at 1,988, with two to three deaths per day this month.
The two groups will meet at 7 p.m. the day after the announcement of the 2,000th death at the Gregory Park fountain in Brainerd. Names of many of the dead will be read.

Crow Wing County Fair Association elections planned
The Crow Wing County Fair Association's annual meeting will be Nov. 3 at the Brainerd Eagles Club, 124 Front St.
The meeting will begin with dinner at 7 p.m.
The agenda will include the election of four board members, financial report, review of 2005 and goals for 2006.

Koering to host town hall meeting on veterans' benefits
Sen. Paul Koering, R-Fort Ripley, will conduct a town hall meeting focusing on veterans' benefits at noon Oct. 29 at the American Legion Hall in Brainerd.
State and federal Veterans Affairs officials will attend to discuss the various benefits and protections available for veterans, as well as active duty military and auxiliary personnel. The meeting will include representatives from Veterans Affairs in St. Cloud and Minneapolis.

Ruud, Howes receive tourism award from resort group
Sen. Carrie Ruud, R-Breezy Point, and Rep. Larry Howes, R-Walker, received a Friend of Tourism Award last week from the Minnesota Resort and Campground Association.
Tom Day, vice president of government affairs for Hospitality Minnesota, said the legislative session was one of the most successful in years. He stated his appreciation of the significant efforts of Howes and Ruud.
The Minnesota Resort and Campground Association serves 1,000 members statewide.
The Legislature, this year, moved the public school start date to after Labor Day, provided tax relief for small resorts and provided a $2 million increase in funding for Explore Minnesota Tourism.
