SARTELL -- Staples-Motley senior Jacque Peterson won her second consecutive Section 8, Class 1A individual tennis title Thursday and advanced to the state girls' tennis tournament, which begins Friday, Oct. 29 at the Nicollet Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
Peterson beat Rachel Erickson of Crookston in the quarterfinals and Ashley Kemp of Roseau in the semis. She then downed Kelly Gust of East Grand Forks 6-1, 6-1 to capture the title.
The three wins improved Peterson's record to 28-3 this season and was ranked ninth in the final Class 1A poll. Over the past two years, Peterson has a 64-6 record.
The doubles team of Amanda DiGiovanni and Kim Mosack finished third in the doubles competition by beating Lindsey Czeczok and Amy Luther of Park Rapids 7-6, (8-6), 6-2. The duo was 22-4 this season in doubles play.
Cardinal freshman Katie Edin was eliminated in the quarterfinal round of individual play as she was ousted by Crookston's Amy Burke. Edin finished the season 21-9.
