SARTELL - The Brainerd Warriors tennis team ended another dry spell Tuesday.
After qualifying for state Monday as a team for the first time in program history, Brainerd's doubles team of Zoe Houle and Taylor Headlee became the first Warrior girls to qualify for state since 1991 when Shelly Breen and Jeanne Jones qualified for the state doubles tournament.
Houle and Headlee qualified for the Class 2A state tournament by virtue of their runner-up finish in Tuesday's Section 8-2A tournament.
In the semifinals, they beat Bo LaFountaine-Megan Schwegman of St. Cloud Apollo 6-1, 6-1.
In the finals they lost to St. Cloud Tech's Abby Mix-Abby Zweiner 6-4, 6-3.
Houle and Headlee will play in the 2A individual state tournament Oct. 29-30 at the Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota.
"They're going to have to play a lot better (at state) than they played today," Warriors coach Ellen Fussy said. "Every match they're going to see better and better opponents. Against better opponents they're going to have to rise to the occasion. They have the ability, they just played a little timid today."
Houle and Headlee, 8-1 as a doubles team, won Central Lakes Conference and North Subsection titles this season.
Semifinals: Zoe Houle-Taylor Headlee (Brd) def. Bo LaFountaine-Megan Schwegman (St. Cloud Apollo) 6-1, 6-1.
Championship: Abby Mix-Abby Zweiner (St. Cloud Tech) def. Houle-Headlee 6-4, 6-3.
Next: Houle-Headlee in Class 2A individual state tournament Oct. 29-30 at Baseline Tennis Center, University of Minnesota.
The Warriors' tennis score against Bemidji was incorrectly reported in Tuesday's Dispatch as 5-2. Brainerd actually beat the Lumberjacks 6-1.
In addition, Kylee Kunde and Jinna Toft were omitted from the list of seniors in the same story.
The Dispatch regrets the errors.
