Writing hot checks hoping to win big at pull-tabs is a temptation too strong for some to resist, but authorities say it's happening too often, resulting in felony convictions for offenders and losses for bars and charities.

30 years ago (1979)

(Photo) Felix Janacek of Star Route, Brainerd, hooked an 18-4 northern on Lost Lake. He was fishing in seven feet of water and used a minnow as bait.

40 years ago (1969)

Mayor Clyde R. Gorham will not seek re-election in the December city elections. The mayor made the announcement last night in a letter to the council which he gave to the city clerk before leaving on a trip to Washington, D.C.

A large, expectant audience greeted the first Musical Club artist of the season, Suzanne Kenyon, on Sunday afternoon at the Elk's Temple. Owing to the non-arrival of a trunk containing her Russian and Chinese costumes, she substituted others.
