AMES, Iowa -- Vern B. Sahr, age 96, passed away at his home in Silvercrest Assisted Living Home in Ames, Iowa, on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004. Funeral services will be at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake on Monday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. Friends may visit at the funeral home Sunday, Oct. 24, from 5-7 p.m. Interment will be at Pinewood Cemetery in Crosslake. Memorials are preferred to "Beyond Welfare" of Ames, Iowa.
Vern was born April 14, 1908, at Easton, Minn., to Herman August and Albertina (Gruhlke) Sahr. In the fall of 1913 he moved with his parents to a farm south of Badger, Minn. He attended school there and graduated from Badger High School in 1927, having missed a year of school due to working on the farm. He finished one year of business college in Fargo, N.D., in 1929, and went to work for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. that same year. He married Helen G. Grothe, also a graduate of Badger High School, on July 2, 1932. Four children were born of their union. He worked in various capacities with Northwestern Bell in North Dakota until his retirement after 41 years of service in June 1970. After retirement Vern and Helen moved to their lake home near Crosslake where Vern lived for 32 years. The last two years he resided at Silvercrest Assisted Living Home in Ames, Iowa, to be near one of his sons.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his mother and father; one brother, Harold; and one daughter, Carol Nelson. He is survived by a brother, Raymond of Brice Lyn; two sons, Eugene, of Eliot, Maine, and David, of Ames, Iowa; one daughter, Nancy Strickland, of Olathe, Kan.; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel of Crosslake.
