WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. - Alexa Hoffman had 38 kills as the Central Lakes College Raiders volleyball team won one of five matches in the Kishwaukee, Wis., tournament Friday and Saturday.
Shayna Foote had 61 digs and 91 set assists and Rachel Voeltz had 16 blocks for the Raiders.
"It was pretty much the same story where we're close but not quite," Raiders coach Jane Peterson said. "When you lose by three or four points you know you're right in a game. We just haven't figured out how to finish off a game. We just don't have the confidence we need to win."
The tournament featured 24 teams with many Division I and II schools. CLC and others were Division III.
"This team has played as tough a schedule as any I've coached," Peterson said. "We've played way more Division II schools than we ever have before. We'll find out if that was a mistake or not."
The Raiders will prepare this week for the Minnesota College Athletic Conference state tournament Saturday and Sunday at Thief River Falls. CLC was state runner-up in 2007.
"We have rarely played as well as we can play," Peterson said. "I think I know how good we could be but we lack consistency in a lot of areas. It's not just one thing, it's more than one person, it's more than one skill. If we were just more consistent we could be a dominant team.
"We have players with the physical ability to do a lot of things. We've been working hard on the mental part, being focused, being prepared, but it's hard to get people to change the way they think but that's a valid and worthwhile thing to do I think."
