Warriors win three of last four events for victory

SARTELL -- Victories in the 200-yard freestyle relay, backstroke and breaststroke enabled the Brainerd Warriors to defeat the Sartell Sabres 97-89 in Central Lakes Conference swimming and diving Tuesday.

The 200 freestyle relay of Jocelyn Jones, Brianna Elg, Christie Nelson and Jessica Reese won. Robyn Wernberg, Cara Wiltse and Hilary Smith then went 1-2-3 in the backstroke and Reese and Dana Hanson went 1-2 in the breaststroke.

In the backstroke and breaststroke Brainerd outscored the Sabres 24-8 to take a 93-79 lead into the final event.

"With four events to go we were down by four points," Warriors coach Dan Anderson said. "The 200 free relay had to swim a season best to beat the Sartell squad. That got us back within two.

"Then our backstrokers went 1-2-3 on them, and in the breaststroke we went 1-2 on them. I'm pretty proud of the way we stepped up when we had to."

Brainerd's Brianna Elg won the individual medley and butterfly and was on two first-place relays. Reese won the breaststroke.

"That time by Reese was really fast," Anderson said. "We're excited about that.

"Elg has just been solid all year."

Courtney Sinner helped Brainerd win diving for the second straight meet.

"It was tied after the 50 free," Anderson said, 'then our divers outscored them 11-5, which got us back up again. Then Sartell came back and hit us hard in a couple events."
