The Brainerd Fire Department responded to a barn fire at the James Kounkel residence in St. Mathias Township. The barn, built in 1928, was a total loss valued at $50,000. Fire fighters could see flames above the tree line from a mile away as they approached.
30 years ago (1980)
Viewing moto-cross racing on TV stirred young David Hewitt to one day enter this type of motorcycle competition. The 12-year-old son of the Dick Hewitts drove his Honda 80 cc to win 21 trophies in 26 events this summer while traveling to nine racetracks.

Residents of Northwest Brainerd turned out in force to complain about problems resulting from the sewer and water project carried out there and also to protest the assessments.
60 years ago (1950)
About 100 students from seven Brainerd grade schools will be sworn into the state school patrol Friday at halftime on Roosevelt Field. Only Riverside and Garfield won't participate as they have no patrol. Lt. Gov. C. Elmer Anderson will witness the event.
80 years ago (1930)
Bitterly exhausted and near death from exposure, two Brainerd hunters were recovering today after they had lain for six hours on the banks of the Gull River. Their boat capsized about a mile south of the bridge on the new, so-called, Pine Beach road.
100 years ago (1910)
Albert LaLonde sent the following note to the Dispatch from Sporting Life: "Charles Albert Bender, an Indian born in Brainerd, Minn., has had a highly successful pitching career for the Philadelphia Athletics, helping them win the first two games of the World Series."
