WALKER -- Cass County zoning permits continued to reflect increased development outside cities here this year.
The Environmental Services Department staff issued 1,265 land use and sanitary permits the first nine months this year, up 40 from last year in the same period.
The mild winter beginning and early spring this year are reflected in larger numbers of permits being issued the first and second quarters this year. Fewer permits were issued in summer months this year than last year.
Variances increased from 52 last year to 62 this year during the first nine months. Conditional uses jumped from 20 last year to 35 this year. Shoreland alterations increased from 169 last year to 181 this year during the first nine months.
The early start in the construction this year is reflected in significantly higher numbers this spring for variances, conditional uses and shoreland alterations than last year.
Land reclassifications were 10 both years during the first nine months.
The highest number of land use zoning and sanitary permits issued were 40 in Crooked Lake Township, 29 in Ponto Lake and 28 each in Powers, South Shingobee, West Sylvan and Woodrow.
There were 26 issued in North Shingobee, 22 in Kego, 21 in Birch Lake, 19 in Hiram, 18 in Wabedo, 15 in East Sylvan, 14 each in Leech Lake and Thunder Lake and 13 each in Becker and Pine River townships.
