Outdoor News

LAKE MILLE LACS

East - Walleyes remain a tough catch during the daytime hours, but the night bite has improved. Trolling shallow-running crankbaits on the rocks and points has been most productive. Perch and muskie action has been limited, but the bays are holding northern pike in nine to 12 feet of water. Grouse hunters are finding some birds, while duck numbers remain low.

West - During the day, slip bobbers and leeches continue to turn walleyes on the flats in 27 to 29 feet. At night, crankbaits are the ticket in eight feet at St. Alban's Bay, Wigwam Bay, Garrison Reef, and Brown's Point. Muskie reports are poor and northern pike are hitting crankbaits on top of the weeds in most bays.

LEECH LAKE AREA

A jig and minnow combination continues to produce walleyes during the day off the points in six to 14 feet of water. These same areas have produced walleyes at night via crankbaits. Perch and muskie reports have been limited, but the weather has prevented a lot of anglers from getting out. The leaves have started to drop, which has opened more opportunities for grouse hunters. Duck numbers are "slightly below average" but there seems to be more mallards in the area this week.

BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA

If you can stand the cold, there are walleyes to be had. Minnows are working best in 18 to 33 feet on Pelican Lake, Gull Lake, and North Long Lake. There is some shallower action along the shorelines at night as well. These same lakes are producing plenty of northern pike via minnows and look for crappies to be suspended over 20 to 24 feet on most lakes.

CASS LAKE AREA

Walleyes and jumbo perch are being found in the five- to seven-foot weeds of Cass Lake - mainly off Stony Point, The Kettle, North Cedar Bar, and Buck's Bar. Pike Bay Lake also is giving up perch in five to seven feet. Suicks are turning big northern pike in Allen's Bay on Cass, Pike Bay, and Lake Andrusia. Muskie action is poor, but the crappies have started suspending over 30 feet on Kitchi Lake and Wolf Lake. Duck numbers have improved a lot with good mallard numbers throughout the area and grouse hunting remains excellent.

CROSBY AREA

Angler numbers have been minimal since the cold arrived. Before the winter-like weather hit, minnows were producing walleyes and northern pike in 20 feet on Rabbit Lake and Serpent Lake so look for that to continue. Crappie action also should pick up again in 14 to 20 feet on most lakes. The leaves are coming down in a hurry so look for the good grouse hunting to continue and duck numbers have improved slightly with the cold weather.

CROSS LAKE AREA

The walleye bite on the Whitefish Chain cooled off since the cold weather arrived. Look for it to again improve with minnows in 20 to 30 feet as soon as it warms. Grouse hunters are taking birds, but there's still a lot of foliage in the woods. Deer registrations went up a bit this week and duck numbers remain low.

HACKENSACK AREA

The cold weather has limited fishing opportunities. Lakes such as Ten Mile and Woman should be good walleye options as soon as the weather warms. Look for crappies on Birch Lake and Pleasant Lake to be suspended over deeper water as well. Grouse hunting reports have improved, duck numbers remain low, and archery hunters are noticing more activity this week.
