In Thursday's Vox Pop, an item headlined "amazing" about OPEB or other post-employment benefits, or retiree benefits, as liabilities for school district employees and others, said the county has bonded for OPEB for years without getting the same headlines the school district receives.
In a clarification, Crow Wing County has not bonded for its OPEB liabilities. The county is using a pay-as-you-go approach along with saving extra funds in the early years to shave off the cost of the peak years.
Crow Wing County Administrator Tim Houle said while bonding is an equally legitimate approach to dealing with the OPEB liability, it is factually inaccurate to say the county is doing so.
The Dispatch regrets the error.
