Brainerd debaters Chad Barnard and Jenny Gross were champions of the 1989 Stillwater Debate Tournament. The Brainerd pair, coached by Doug Johnson, went undefeated in four rounds involving 23 varsity teams.
30 years ago (1979)
The issue of Brainerd Police Chief Wayne Hasty's demotion will take a brief side trip to District Court. Hasty's attorney, Tom Ryan has asked the court to rule on whether two of the three members of the civil service commission can give Hasty a fair hearing.
40 years ago (1969)
Nearly half of the student body at Brainerd State Junior College attended a discussion meeting in the college's Little Theater and lounge as part of the nationwide moratorium to protest the war in Vietnam. No forms of violent protest were noted.
60 years ago (1949)
Over 200 volunteer workers went into action today as the 1949 Community Chest drive was officially launched. Carl Erickson is the chair of the drive which will attempt to reach or exceed its goal of $18,000.
80 years ago (1929)
Authorities probed the death of a 16-year-old high school girl, killed almost instantly when the car in which she was a passenger turned turtle on Ash Avenue. With unmistakable signs of liquor in the death car, manslaughter charges may result.
100 years ago (1909)
There was no game with the Aitkin High School football team today. It was called off by school authorities. An agreement was reached by area high schools to adopt the collegiate rule that students must be up in their studies. Brainerd is thus ineligible.
