Sometimes, diving is a forgotten part of a swimming and diving team.
That wasn't the case Tuesday as Amanda Johnson, Annie Bahr and Lauren Trapp all dove personal bests and helped the Brainerd Warriors to a 113-63 victory over the Rocori Spartans in Central Lakes Conference swimming and diving Tuesday.
The win pushed Brainerd to an unbeaten conference record (8-0) for the third year in a row.
"It's really cool to just be a part of a team and know you're that solid," said Johnson. "We're so close, we give each other support and that makes it all click."
Johnson demonstrated her gymnastics skills on the diving board, securing a first-place score of 222.6 points. Not only was it a personal best for Johnson, but it also was the fourth-best score in school history. Johnson bettered her previous best of 215.70, which was the previous fourth highest score.
"I was shocked at first," Johnson said about her performance. "For the most part I've been doing the same dives and I'm definitely happy with the way they've come along."
Bahr also attained her-personal best score of 200.6 for second place. That moved Bahr from the 14th-best to the ninth-best score in school history. It eclipsed her previous best of 192.40.
Trapp also finished with a personal best for fourth place.
She showed her pleasure after winning the diving competition in Tuesday's meet.
"Our divers did awesome," said Warriors coach Dan Anderson. "Those are incredible scores. They're really starting to click at the right time."
Johnson's victory puts her at six wins this season. Her lowest finish was third at the Rosemount Invitational and in a dual meet against Alexandria. Bahr has been right behind her teammate all year.
"Amanda has had a real steady year," said Brainerd diving coach Mary Streiff. "She's been our No. 1 diver in almost every meet. Now she's peaking at the right time.
"Annie is right there with her. They're both seniors and they both are throwing the same difficulty in their dives. They've worked really well together for several years now."
Facing a young Rocori team, Anderson switched his lineup around and it paid off. Freshman Brianna Elg captured her first varsity victory in the 200-yard freestyle and followed it up with a win in the 500 free.
"I'm really happy with Erin Donnelly's 100 breaststroke," said Anderson. "She's really battling shoulder tendinitis. Getting second, she's been waiting to do that all year."
Krystal Halverson won the 200 individual medley, Christina Roberts won the 50 free, Cara Wiltse won the 100 backstroke, Kara Rutman won the 100 free and senior captain Krista Rauen won the 100 butterfly.
Brainerd swept the top three spots five times, forcing it to swim exhibitions in six of the last seven races.
"Rocori is a very young team," said Anderson. "We had some girls that had to swim some races. They're fighting for section spots. Then we took some of our varsity girls and swam them in fewer races. Our score still got a little farther out of control than I would have liked, but we have so much depth."
