HIBBING -- The Pierz Pioneers girls' tennis season ended Monday after getting beat by Virginia 4-3 in Section 7A tournament play.
Stacey Gruber was the only singles player to win for the Pioneers. She defeated Lindsey Shoden in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
The doubles teams of Sheena Loidolt/Becky Korf, along with Shiela Stegora/Kelly Lochner, both won their matches.
The Pioneers finished 19-4.

Jacque Peterson wins 8A
South Subsection title
FARGO, N.D. -- The Staples-Motley Cardinals advanced all four of their entries in the South Subsection 8A individual tennis tournament Friday.
In the opening round, Jacque Peterson of Staples-Motley beat Naiya Cohrs of Park Rapids 6-4, 6-1. Laura Warn of S-M beat Janae Zutter of New York Mills 6-0, 6-0. Netesse Pettit of Wadena-Deer Creek defeated Brenda Kimmes of New York Mills 6-1, 6-1. Erika Haman of W-DC was defeated by Danielle Husby of Park Rapids 6-3, 6-3.
The second round was controlled by the Cardinals. Both Warn and Peterson advanced as Warn won 6-1, 6-3, while Peterson won 6-4, 6-0. Pettit lost in the second round, but came back to win the third-place match against Danielle Husby 6-2, 7-6 with a tie breaker of 7-1.
In the championship match, Peterson prevailed over Warn. Warn won the first game 6-4, but Peterson countered by winning 7-6 (tiebreaker 7-3), and 6-3.
On the doubles side, it was Staples-Motley winning again.
In the first round, Emily Waldahl and Rose Mills of S-M defeated Beth Hemming and Sarah Leverson of W-DC 6-1, 6-0. Also in the first round, Daphne Griffith and Nicki Hoffman of S-M defeated Becky Miller and Mikaela Hutson of W-DC 6-1, 6-0.
In the next round, Waldahl and Milless moved on by defeating their foe from Park Rapids 6-1, 6-3. Griffith and Hoffman lost to a team from Park Rapids, but went on to win the third-place game 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (10-8), and 6-1. In the championship match, it was Waldahl and Milless prevailing in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 over Megan Luther and Abbie McMorrow of Park Rapids.
