Headlee-Houle win subsection

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Brainerd Warriors tandem of Taylor Headlee-Zoe Houle finished 3-0 to win the North Subsection 8-2A individual tournament Wednesday and advance to the Section 8-2A tournament.

Brainerd's singles player Mikinzee Salo finished second and also will advance to Sartell's Gold's Gym.

Joining them in the section tournament will be Little Falls Flyer Jule Wenzkus, who finished third.

Salo won her first two matches 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-1, before dismissing Wenzkus 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals. The championship went to No. 1 seed Jamie Hoffman of Bemidji 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-2.

"We're hoping Mikinzee will get to see Hoffman again in the section finals," said Warrior coach Ellen Fussy. "Mikinzee played one of the best matches we've seen her play to finish second. She played one more match than Hoffman."

No. 1 seeded Headlee-Houle breezed through the brackets winning each match in straight sets before claiming the championship because the second-seeded Bemidji team withdrew because of illness.
