20 years ago (1989)

Doug Keran, natural resources instructor at Brainerd Technical College, can safely say his career is for the birds. He spends much of his time studying and saving birds, and recently rehabilitated and returned to the wild a great horned owl and a red-tailed hawk.

30 years ago (1979)

Brainerd's city council members face a deadline this week to reconsider their decision not to fluoridate the city's water. Attorney Jack Graham is speaking to the Supreme Court to see what penalties may be imposed if the council stands its ground.

40 years ago (1969)

Employment in Brainerd during September was the highest ever recorded here since records were started in 1948, according to the Minnesota State Employment Service.

60 years ago (1949)

The Brainerd City Council, in a specially called meeting and after heated discussion, approved four special licensing ordinances. They call for a $5 license for second-hand dealers, $50 for used car dealers, and $25 on pinball machines and juke boxes.

80 years ago (1929)

Construction was underway today on the new $18,000 factory building for Kampmann & Son, sash and door manufacturers on South 10th Street. Increased business necessitated the new two story building with concrete basement.

100 years ago (1909)

A team of horses belonging to H.H. Hitch indulged in an expensive runaway when they dashed into the big plate glass window at R. Parker's Dry Goods store. The window, one of the largest in the city, was insured, and the insurance was to run out in two days time.
