LITTLE FALLS - On Oct. 6 in Morrison County District Court Daniel Eastman, 33, was sentenced to serve 68 months in prison following a probation violation, according to the Morrison County attorney's office.

Two people riding in the same group of ATVs were injured in separate crashes Saturday in Barrows, the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department reported.

DNR NOTES
In the fall of 2007, an estimated 7,000 lesser scaup and an unknown number of coots on Lake Winnibigoshish died from eating snails that were infected with parasitic trematodes. The DNR surveys of Winnie this summer revealed the presence of the faucet snail, Bithynia tentaculata, the invasive species that carries the parasite that can infect and kill ducks.

Man gets 27 months in intentional crash case
William Robert Fearing, 20, was sentenced Friday to 27 months in prison for holding his ex-girlfriend and their child against their will in a vehicle that he intentionally crashed.

Fight leads to stabbing, arrest
A fight Saturday at a cabin near North Long Lake led to one man being hospitalized with stab wounds and another man in jail for assault, the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department reported.

OUR OPINION: Citizen of Year
Chip Borkenhagen's selection this month as the 2008 Brainerd Citizen of the Year prompted a reaction which we've heard voiced when other deserving recipients received that honor.

Women are now 54 percent of all voters. Some of the occupations of former presidents and vice presidents include farmer, tailor, teacher (two) sheriff, rancher (two), editor, engineer and author. Were they more qualified than a governor and a mom with five children? No one gender has a patent on leadership qualities.
